I Like Writing Stories

It was dark that night, not a light in the room, nothing, total darkness. He sat there, thinking. Thinking was never a good thing to do, but he did it anyway, pondering his existence, wondering if all the little things meant anything. Not the normal little things though, the little things that, though small and seemingly insignificant, were... odd, somehow.

He wondered whether those creatures living in the house with him lived in everyone's houses. He'd never really gained the confidence to ask anyone about them, but they were there. Crawling up the walls, making their odd little grunts and hisses, occasionally sounding like they were actually saying something. He was used to them being there in the background, had no fear, he'd known them all his life.

He wondered whether the walls were supposed to shudder at night. Whether the house wasn't built strong enough for even the slightest breeze. The flashing lights, he wondered about those too. They were more regular now than before, and the tapping at the window, that was almost comforting.

He had no reason to question them, he knew nothing else, but still, he did.

He sat there for hours, thinking about it, questioning what he had always thought was right, and eventually fell to sleep. That night, as usual, the creatures spoke, the window was tapped, the lights flashed, the walls shook... But the next morning, he didn't wake up.

Maybe the walls shook a little too much, maybe the creatures had killed him, maybe whatever was tapping at the window had finally gotten inside.

It doesn't matter really does it?
